Externship Program
Fall 2023 – Spring 2024
Description
The Center for Anxiety and Behavioral Change is pleased to announce a clinical externship opportunity at our Rockville, MD and McLean, VA clinics. The Center for Anxiety and Behavioral Change, LLC, is a thriving fee-for-service practice with a team approach that currently consists of 8 full-time licensed psychologists, a licensed clinical social worker, a post-doctoral fellow, an extern, and support staff across our Rockville, MD and McLean, VA offices. We are passionate about providing state-of-the-art, evidence-based cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) in the context of a warm, compassionate and collaborative environment. Engaging the community through professional training and community outreach are central components to our mission. We draw patients regionally, nationally, and internationally for our specialty services.
This training program is designed for advanced doctoral students in psychology who have prior clinical experience and who have completed the majority of their coursework. Throughout the training experience, clinical students will engage in intake coordination activities and carry a small caseload of patients. Students will gain experience providing evidence-based cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, OCD, and behavioral issues such as oppositionality and disruptive disorders. Students will have an opportunity to learn and apply skills from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), parent management training, mindfulness-based interventions, and the Unified Protocol in addition to standard CBT interventions. Clinical work will be primarily with youth (ages 5-17), although there will be opportunities to take on adult cases, depending on clinical interest.
Responsibilities
The weekly time commitment is approximately 16 hours. Responsibilities include 6 to 8 hours per week of direct clinical services, in addition to conducting initial phone screens, administering clinical intakes, and co-leading group therapy. Previous experience in CBT and working with children/adolescents is recommended. Supervision of cases will be provided in accordance with school requirements. At a minimum, externs will attend one (1) hour of individual supervision, one (1) hour of group supervision, and one (1) hour of weekly didactic training for the duration of the academic year. Externs are also invited to participate in our monthly case conference and gain experience in case presentation.
