Solution-Focused Therapy
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
– Albert Einstein
Solution-focused therapy (SFT) is a type of brief, goal-oriented, future-focused psychotherapy that emphasizes finding solutions to current problems rather than exploring their origins. This therapy assumes that change is constant and inevitable and is grounded in the belief that clients have the strengths and resources to solve their own problems, and that focusing on practical solutions can lead to positive change.
SFT involves identifying times or situations when the problem was less severe or absent. These exceptions provide clues about how to more effectively resolve the problem and highlight what is already working. By identifying and building on moments when the client was able to manage or improve their situation, SFT empowers clients to take an active role in solving their own problems and helps clients realize that they have the ability to make positive changes, boosting both motivation and engagement in therapy.
